A 2024 Runner’s guide to Mastering the Art of Gear Selection.

Day 4 - Move January Series.

Welcome to the 4th session of our Move January running series to help kick-start your running journey.

The right running gear is a game-changer. It's not just about comfort; it’s about performance, injury prevention, and even motivation.

Let’s chat about dressing up (or down) for our runs through the seasons. What we wear can make or break our run, especially when the weather throws a curveball.

So, how do we strike that sweet spot between staying snug and not turning into a walking sauna mid-run?

Let’s dive in and let’s explore how to select the best gear for your running journey.

Seasons Are Key.

  • Ah, the tricky in-betweeners.

Layers are your BFFs here. Start with a moisture-wicking base, add a breathable middle layer (think light fleece or a long-sleeve tee), and maybe a wind-resistant jacket if it’s nippy.

As you warm up, you can shed a layer and tuck it away. It's like an onion strategy - layer up, peel off!

  • It’s all about light and airy. Think thin, breathable fabrics that let your skin breathe and sweat evaporate.

Don't forget a cap and sunscreen to shield you from that relentless sun.

Pro tip: Light colors are cooler – literally. They reflect the sun, keeping you a bit cooler than dark hues.

  • This one’s a bit of a juggling act. You want to start off warm but remember, you’ll heat up as you move.

Layer up with a thermal base, an insulating layer (fleece or wool), and a windproof, waterproof shell if it’s really chilly or wet.

But here’s the key – don’t go overboard. If you’re a bit cool when you step out, that’s okay. You’ll warm up once your legs get going!

  • No matter the season, avoid cotton like it’s a puddle on your running path. Why? Once it’s wet, it stays wet, and that can lead to chafing (ouch!) or make you feel over-chilled when the temperature drops.

Visibility for Safety: If you run early in the morning or late at evening, wear high-visibility clothing or accessories for safety.

Technical Apparel: Beyond Just Clothes.

When it comes to running, what you wear is more than a fashion statement; it's a crucial part of your performance and comfort. Technical apparel in the running world goes far beyond aesthetics. Let’s explore the science behind these high-tech threads and why they’re a game-changer in your running routine.

The Importance of Proper Running Shoes.

Why It Matters.

Biomechanical Needs: Everyone’s feet and running styles are different. The right shoes cater to your specific biomechanical needs, which can prevent common injuries like shin splints or runner’s knee.

Cushioning and Support: Shoes with proper cushioning absorb impact, while support ensures stability during your runs. Make sure to test these shoes first as you want to hit the right balance between cushioning, support and feeling the ground beneath you.

Tips For Choosing Your Shoes.

Gait Analysis: Consider getting a professional gait analysis at a specialty running store. This will determine whether you need shoes for stability, cushioning, or motion control.

Try Before You Buy: Always try on running shoes and, if possible, take them for a short test run. Look for a comfortable fit with enough room to wiggle your toes.

At Lupa Run, we have partnered with Bahé - a foot attire brand known for their focus on grounding.

Grounding, also known as "earthing," has been gaining traction amongst biohacking, elite sports people, and wellness communities due to its many health and wellbeing benefits.

Simply, grounding is the practice of making direct electrical contact with the earth, such as when walking barefoot on grass or swimming in the ocean. The earth has a slight negative charge, whereas us humans tend to have a slight positive charge. By reconnecting with the earth, this electrical tension can be resolved.

Technical Apparel: Beyond Just Clothes.

The Science of Running Clothes:

Fabric Technology: Modern running clothes are designed with technical fabrics that wick sweat away from your body, helping to regulate temperature and reduce irritation.

Fit and Function: Proper fit ensures comfort and freedom of movement. Compression gear can provide muscle support and improve blood circulation.

Accessories and Gadgets: The Extras That Count

Essential Accessories:

  • Socks: Invest in running-specific socks that provide cushioning and reduce the risk of blisters.

  • Headgear: A hat or headband for sun protection, and a thermal beanie for cold weather.

  • Hydration Solutions: For long runs, consider hydration packs or belts to stay hydrated without breaking your stride.

Tech Gadgets:

  • Running Watches: A good running watch can track your pace, distance, heart rate, and more. Some even offer GPS mapping and custom training plans.

  • Lupa Run App: Pair your runs with the Lupa Run app for personalised audio coaching and real-time feedback, enhancing your running experience and helping you reach your goals, with the power of mindful running.
